Explaining the Hadees on Sex with Wife even on the Camel

Last night I was wondering how can a couple have sex on camel. I mean I ask all the rational minds that Can a Husband and a Wife have sex while riding camel??Is it possible? I think both of them will fall down isn’t it.Okay now let’s see the Hadees:

It was narrated that:Abdullah bin Abu Awfa said “When Muadh bin Jabal came from Sham, he prostrated to the Prophet who said: ‘What is this, O Muadh?’ He said: ‘I went to Sham and saw them prostrating to their bishops and patricians and I wanted to do that for you.’ The messenger of Allah said: ‘Do not do that. If I were to command anyone to prostrate to anyone other than Allah, I would have commanded women to prostrate to their husbands. By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad! No woman can fulfill her duty towards Allah until she fulfills her duty towards her husband. If he asks her (for intimacy) even if she is on her camel saddle, she should not refuse.’ ”
[Sunan Ibn Majah,Book 9, Hadith 1926 ]

This is the very Hadees that Christians and Islamophobes often quote to malign Islam and Bash Muslims. They try to show that how Muslims are inconsiderate to their womenfolks.They say that the above hadees are actually very destructive and offensive to women, because women have to have sex with their husbands whenever the husband wants it even if the wife is on the back of a camel or at the stove.

So now let me explain the Hadees particularly the last 3 lines. So here I re-quote again.

“…..By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad! No woman can fulfill her duty towards Allah until she fulfills her duty towards her husband. If he asks her (for intimacy) even if she is on her camel saddle, she should not refuse.”[Sunan Ibn Majah,Book 9, Hadith 1926 ]

Okay,lets start.
1. This hadees is hyperbolic and not to be taken literally.
2. Its gist is that the wife should not refuse her husband’s advances,until and unless there is no valid or legitimate reason. For e.g., menstruation,illness,etc. and
3. The opposite is also established from the Qur’an: In Qu’ran 4:129 {turn not away (from a woman) altogether, so as to leave her (as it were) hanging}
4. The prophet approved Salman’s word to Abu al-Darda: In Bukhari, vol 7, Hadees 127 “and your wife has a right over you.” Shayk G.F. Haddad comments:” this unanimously means cohabitation.”
5. And al-Qurtubi said: Tafsir al-Qurtubi for 2:178 “She has over him the same right of sexual cohabitation he has over her”
6. The prophet explicitly stipulated that a Muslim must seek his wife’s permission even for coitus interruptus.

Hadees on Wife’s right to have sexual intercourse can be found in [Saheeh Muslim Book 018, Number 4251],Bukhaari 1874 and Muslim 1159.

So basically the above hadees is stressing on the fact that a Wife should respond to her husband’s advances. This hadees doesn’t say that Husband can do sex on a camel with her wife. As we all know it is practically impossible. And moreover we know that Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) said:” Every faith has an innate character.The character of Islam is modesty.”[ Al Muwatta, Vol 47, Hadees 9]. So now it’s pretty much clear to all of you that it’s not permissible to have sex on high streets.Because if we do that our nakedness gonna be exposed to public and this is something immodesty which Islam doesn’t permit. We should have sex behind closed doors with our wives. So as the Husband is the breadwinner of the family and takes care of her and fulfil her all legitimate demands. So it’s obligatory on wife that She should also make her husband Happy when He advances towards her. As Qur’an 2:187 says “They are garments for you and you are garments for them.” However this Hadees doesn’t say that a Husband should force his wife into sex when she is unwilling to do.

A husband and wife must protect each other from harm just like a garment protects the body from any harm and discomfort. A husband and wife who fulfil each others sexual needs will protect each other from fornication and adultery, just like a garment protects the body from harm. The verse 2:187 confirms that both husband and wife must fulfil each others sexual needs. It is the nature of garments that they bring comfort, dignity, and keep one from indecency and harm. A husband and wife must exercise their rights within the Qur’anic paradigm of love and mercy. Particular rulings must be understood in the context of general rulings, for affirming one matter does not entail negating another. All rights in marriage must be understood within the clear context of the Qur’anic command to “live together in excellence, love and mercy”, and the words of the Prophet: “The most perfect of believers are those most perfect of character; and the best of you are the best of you to your spouses.”

In Islam men are obligated to satisfy their wives during sexual intercourse, and to act romantic with them. Marital rape is strictly forbidden.
