Lots of People say that Islam is the new religion that sprang up in Arabia 1400 years ago. People have a misconception that Islam is 1400 years old and that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is the founder of this religion. Surely, they haven’t ever opened Qur’an to inquire what it says. So for them I am posting two verses from Qur’an that may clear their misconception.
“He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what We enjoined upon Abraham and Moses and Jesus – to establish the religion and not be divided therein…..” [Qur’an 42:13]
Again Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said that the religion of all the prophets is One. As
we read in a hadees:
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Both in this world and in the Hereafter, I am the nearest of all the people to Jesus, the son of Mary. The prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers are different, but their religion is one.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 3443]
And what was the religion Allah ordained upon Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)?
“…..This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion…..” [Qur’an 5:3]
So, Islam is the religion that Ordained for Prophet Muhammad and his followers, and this is the same religion he ordained before for all the previous Prophets and their people.
Another verse which confirms that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is not the founder of any new religion but the last and final messenger is:
“Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and last of the prophets.” [Qur’an 33:40]
The above mentioned verses clearly states that Muhammad (pbuh) is not the founder of any new religion, nor was any of the Prophets a founder of a separate religion, but it has been one and the same Religion which all the Prophets have been presenting from Allah from the very beginning, and the same is being presented by Muhammad (pbuh). In this regard, the first name mentioned is of the Prophet Noah, who was the first Prophet after the Flood. After him the Holy Prophet Muhammad (upon whom be Allah’s peace) has been mentioned, who is the last of the Prophets; then the Prophet Abraham has been mentioned, whom the Arabs acknowledged as their guide, and last of all, the Prophets Moses and Jesus have been mentioned to whom the Jews and the Christians attribute their religions. This does not mean that only these five Prophets had been enjoined this Religion, but what is meant to be said is that all the Prophets who came to this world, brought one and the same Religion and the names of the five illustrious Prophets have been mentioned only as examples through whom the world received the most well known codes of Divine Law. As for other Prophets, for e.g., Prophet Joseph(pbuh) was a Muslim[see Qur’an 12:101] ;Prophet Jacob and his sons were Muslims [Qur’an 2:133] ;Prophet Solomon was Muslim [see Qur’an 27:30-31].
Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) said to his people:
And Moses said, “O my people, if you have believed in Allah , then rely upon Him, if you should be Muslims.” [Qur’an 10:84]
The real religion of the Israelites was not Judaism but Islam as was known to their friends and foes alike. That is why the last words that Pharaoh said while drowning were:
And We took the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them in tyranny and enmity until, when drowning overtook him, he said, “I believe that there is no deity except that in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims.” [Qur’an 10:90]
This verse clearly Shows that all Israelis who were true followers of Moses were Muslims. (take it in a sense like, all the Jordanian are Muslims, all Turks are Muslims, and all Israeli (true followers of Moses) were Muslims. Here Jordanian, Turk and Israeli are nationalities and not a name of religion)
Moreover Allah has named previous nations “Muslims” on whom Allah revealed Divine Books and sent Prophets. As we read in Qur’an:
“…..Allah named you “Muslims” before [in former scriptures] and in this [revelation] that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over the people…..” [Qur’an 22:78]
So, Muslim includes all those human beings, who, from the beginning of human history, believed in Tauhid, the Hereafter, Prophethood and the divine Books. They were not Jews, Christians, etc. but Muslims in the sense that they had surrendered themselves to Allah. Likewise the followers of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are not Muhammadans but Muslims.
In another verse the People of former scriptures affirm that they were Muslims before. As we read in Qur’an:
“Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it – they are believers in it. And when it is recited to them, they say, “We have believed in it; indeed, it is the truth from our Lord. Indeed we were, [even] before it, Muslims [submitting to Allah ].” [Qur’an 28:52-53]
The verse is saying, ‘Indeed we were, [even] before it, Muslims [submitting to Allah]’, which means they had no other faith than Islam and they have believed in this Book too, which this Prophet has brought from Allah. Thus, no change has occurred in the religion: as they were Muslims before even as they are Muslims now. This saying clearly indicates that Islam is not the name of the faith brought by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the term Muslim is not only applicable to his followers, but Islam has been the faith of all the prophets since the very beginning and their followers were Muslims in every age. No interruption occurred in the Islam of those people who believed in the former prophet and also affirmed faith in the prophet who succeeded him. They continued to be Muslims as they had been Muslims before. It is strange that even some learned men also have failed to comprehend this fact, and this clear verse also could not satisfy them.
It is matter of common sense that GOD is not so unwise that he will send different prophets for different religions. It does not make any sense at all. In fact he sent all prophets for one path which is Islam, and we also know from Qur’an that Allah has sent Prophets every time commanding to worship Him(Allah) alone and avoid false deities[See Qur’an 16:36, 21:25, 43:45]. The fact is that the Qur’an has expressed this fundamental principle at scores of other places that the real way of life is only Islam (submission to Allah), and in God’s universe there can be no other way of life than this for His creatures. Since the beginning of the creation every Prophet who came for the guidance of mankind brought this very way of life: the Prophets themselves have always been Muslims, and they impressed upon their followers also to live as Muslims, and all their followers who submitted to the divine command brought by the Prophets, were also Muslims in every age.
Therefore, Muslims believe that Islam is not a new religion with a new scripture. Far from Faith and Practice being the youngest of the major monotheistic world religions, from a Muslim point of view Islam is the oldest because it represents the original as well as the final revelation of the God of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad. ISLAM is not a new religion but the final culmination and fulfillment of the same basic truth that ALLAH revealed through all His Prophets to every people. It is Islam which is the first and the oldest of all religions. People have a misconception that Islam is 1400 years old and that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is the founder of this religion. Islam existed since time immemorial, ever since man first set foot on this earth. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was not the founder of Islam. He was the last and final Messenger of Almighty God.
